Case study: how Fevicol made "bond" the strongest word in Indian advertising

Fevicol, from Pidilite Industries, is the case study every OOH planner in India studies at least once. Working with Ogilvy since the 1980s, the brand turned a commodity like adhesive into a brand people quote in everyday conversation. The outdoor work, especially the overcrowded bus and the reinforced egg, has been widely covered in trade press and taught in advertising schools.

The goal

Move Fevicol from a category product bought by carpenters to a household name that families ask for by brand. Do it without television dominating the mix.

The approach on the road

One promise, delivered as visual jokes: things that stay stuck. Hoardings and print showed the packed rural bus that never lost a passenger, the egg the hen could not crack, the sofa that held on to the family. Every unit ended with the same yellow and white Fevicol lockup and the line "Fevicol ka mazboot jod hai, tootega nahin".

What is documented

Pidilite's annual reporting records long running investment in Fevicol marketing and recognitions for different campaigns. It does not let us isolate the commercial effect of any one outdoor creative. Treat the work as a lesson in a durable brand device, not a promise that visual humour will produce the same result in another category.

What we can learn

Own one idea and repeat it visually. Fevicol never advertised the product features. It advertised the promise, again and again, through different scenes. The medium changed, the joke changed, the promise did not. That is what makes an outdoor campaign compound instead of decay.
