Case study: how Amul turned a hoarding into a national ritual
There is no better long form case study in Indian outdoor advertising than the Amul topical. Started in 1966 by Sylvester daCunha for Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, the campaign has featured the same butter girl reacting to the news of the week for close to sixty years. It is publicly credited by the Limca Book of Records as the longest running ad campaign in the world.
The goal
Keep Amul butter, a low involvement grocery product, top of mind for Indian households week after week without expensive celebrity spends. Build a personality that felt current and Indian at the same time.
The approach on the road
A single hoarding format, a fixed layout with the Amul girl on the left, a punny line about a fresh headline on the right, and the tagline "Utterly Butterly Delicious Amul". Hoardings were refreshed every one to two weeks across cities so commuters saw a new joke on the same board they passed daily.
What is documented
Amul's own campaign history dates the account to 1966 and describes the move from routine corporate advertising to topical work. It is a valuable example of a brand system that could react to current events while staying recognisable. Public material does not provide an audited outdoor media plan or a campaign by campaign sales result, so this should not be used as an ROI benchmark.
What we can learn
Consistency is the multiplier. The layout never changed, so every new joke inherited the equity of the last one. The message rode current events, so the brand felt alive without paying for celebrity. And it stayed on hoardings, not just print and social, because a physical presence at the crossroads made the joke a small daily event on the commute.
