Why lighting changes how a hoarding performs

Why lighting changes how a hoarding performs

Two hoardings can face the same road, carry the same size and quote a similar rate, yet perform very differently. One of the most common reasons is lighting. An unlit board effectively stops working when the light goes, and in Indian cities a large part of the day is spent travelling after sunset.

What lighting actually buys you

Lighting extends the working hours of the site. Evening traffic on most NCR corridors is heavy, slower and often more relaxed, which is a good state for a message to register. A board that is visible from early morning through late evening simply gets more useful exposure for the same monthly rental.

The types you will be quoted

  • Front lit, where fixtures throw light onto the face of the board from outside.
  • Back lit, where the light sits behind a translucent face for a cleaner and brighter look.
  • Digital or LED, which is self lit and can rotate several advertisers.
  • Unlit, which relies entirely on daylight and surrounding street light.
Ask whether the lights actually run, and until what time. A site listed as lit is only lit in practice if the fixtures are working and switched on through the evening.

When unlit is still a fair choice

Unlit sites can be sensible when the campaign is aimed at daytime traffic, when the surrounding street lighting is genuinely strong, or when the budget is tight and the location is otherwise excellent. The point is to know what you are trading away and to pay accordingly.

What to check before you sign

Look for a recent evening photograph from the road, not only a daytime shot. Confirm who pays for electricity and repairs. Ask what happens if the lights fail during the campaign, and whether that is compensated.

The takeaway

Lighting is not a small line item. It decides how many hours a day your money is working. Compare lit and unlit options on the same road before assuming the cheaper rate is the better deal.
