How to plan outdoor media for a consumer app

Person using a consumer app on a smartphone

A consumer app is available everywhere, but that does not make every outdoor site useful. The strongest plan finds the place and moment when the app solves a clear problem, then makes the name easy to recall when the person can safely use a phone.

Choose one use case and moment

Start with the behaviour, not a broad age group. A food app may matter on an evening commute. A travel app may matter near stations and airport routes. A payment or local service app may need market and neighbourhood familiarity. Write the moment in one sentence before requesting sites.

Decide whether the campaign needs new users, renewed use or trust in a new area. These goals need different messages. An installation campaign explains the core job. A reactivation campaign gives an existing user a current reason to return.

Match the format to the action

  • Use roadside hoardings for a memorable name and one use case.
  • Use metro, mall or lift media when people have time to read or scan safely.
  • Use digital screens for time relevant messages only when the booked dayparts and plays are confirmed.
  • Repeat the same visual cue across the route and the app store page.

A QR code is not a default. On a fast road, use a short app name or search phrase. In a waiting area, a large code may help if the destination is verified and the reason to scan is clear.

The hoarding does not need to explain the whole product. It needs to make one useful promise and the app name easy to find later.

Prepare the digital handoff

Check that the app store page, screenshots and first open experience match the outdoor promise. Use a campaign landing page or approved attribution method where appropriate. Test every link and code on common devices before release. Collect only the data the business is authorised to use.

Measure beyond raw installs

Record normal branded searches, store page visits, installs and the first meaningful action before launch. Compare target areas and campaign dates carefully. Other paid media, app store featuring, promotions and product changes can affect the same signals, so avoid crediting every change to outdoor.

Connect the channels with the outdoor and digital guide, decide on codes with the QR code checklist, and buy screens with the digital loop guide.
