Out of home as a business in 2026: the numbers and the value

If you are deciding whether outdoor belongs in your media plan, it helps to understand the business behind the formats. The core asset is attention in public space. What is changing is the quality of the asset, the data around it and the growth of digital screens and transit media.

The current global picture

The World Out of Home Organization forecasts global OOH expenditure of US$56.4 billion in 2026. Its report puts 2025 spend at US$54.2 billion and forecasts digital out of home at US$28 billion in 2026. That is a forecast of advertiser expenditure, not the revenue of every media owner, so it is best used as a market direction rather than a rate card.

India's next five years

Published forecasts use different currency bases and methods, so they should not be mixed as if they were one number. PwC's India outlook puts OOH revenue at US$568 million in 2024 and forecasts US$798 million by 2029, a five year view with digital OOH as the faster growing part. EY's 2026 India report estimates OOH revenue at INR 73.6 billion for 2026 and INR 85 billion by 2028. Together, they point to steady growth driven by premium sites, rising commuter traffic and a larger digital and transit mix.

What advertisers get from it

  • Broad public reach that is difficult to skip, block or scroll past.
  • Repeated exposure on real routes, which helps memory build over time.
  • A visible local presence around a store, service area, event or commuter corridor.
  • A useful partner for search, social, retail and other channels when the message is consistent.

What viewers get from it

Good outdoor can be useful public communication: wayfinding, local openings, cultural events and concise brand information. Bad outdoor adds clutter, glare and distraction. That is why site safety, permission, lighting control and clear creative are not only compliance matters. They are part of the medium's licence to operate in a shared city.

The value is not created by a structure alone. It comes from a safe site, a relevant audience, honest delivery proof and a message people can understand quickly.
