When to renew, drop or replace a hoarding site

When to renew, drop or replace a hoarding site

The end of a monthly cycle is where a lot of outdoor money leaks away, because the decision is made in a hurry to keep the site live. A five minute review before renewal usually saves a lot.

Ask three honest questions

  • Did anything measurable change in the business during the month, at least in the campaign catchment?
  • Did the site actually get delivered as promised, based on proof of display photos and any spot checks?
  • Are there better sites available on the same route or catchment at similar or lower rates?

Renew when the answer is yes and yes

If you saw a lift in enquiries, footfall, deliveries or brand recall in the local area, and the site was delivered cleanly, renew. Continuity is a big part of what makes outdoor work. Cutting a good site short in month two usually wastes the memory you built in month one.

Replace when the route is right but the site is not

Sometimes the route is genuinely serving your audience, but the specific board is not pulling its weight. In that case, ask your partner for alternatives on the same corridor. You keep the audience and refresh the visibility.

A quiet audit trick: drive the route yourself at the same time of day for a week. Note whether your board reads clearly, whether competition has crept in and whether the surroundings have changed.

Drop when the audience is not there

If a full month of good delivery still produced nothing you can point to, the audience match is probably wrong. Do not renew out of habit. Move the budget to a different area or a different format and treat the first month as tuition.

Keep a short renewal note per site

Write two lines at the end of every month: what worked, what did not. Over three or four campaigns you will build a personal shortlist of sites and routes that actually pay you back, which is far more valuable than any generic rate card.
