How to plan outdoor advertising for a new store opening
A new store does not need vague citywide fame. It needs the right people to know that the store exists, understand why it is relevant and remember where to find it. Outdoor can do that well when the plan is built around the real catchment.
Draw the catchment from customer behaviour
Start with the places likely customers already visit: residential sectors, office clusters, schools, markets and connecting roads. The useful catchment is not always a neat circle. A flyover, one way road, metro line or congested junction can change how people actually reach the store.
Mark the main approach routes and the direction of travel on each. A prominent board facing traffic that moves away from the store may build awareness, but it is a weak directional site.
Build a three layer site plan
- Catchment sites introduce the brand where likely customers begin their journey.
- Route sites repeat the message on the roads leading toward the area.
- Arrival sites give a simple landmark or distance cue close to the destination.
The exact number depends on the size of the catchment and the budget. Every site should have one of these jobs. This prevents the plan from becoming a collection of famous junctions with no connection to the store.
Give each phase one clear message
Before opening, communicate the category, area and opening date. During launch week, lead with the reason to visit. After opening, replace the date with a lasting benefit and a useful location cue. Keep the store name and visual identity consistent so each exposure strengthens the previous one.
Prepare the destination before the media goes live
Check that the store name, map listing, phone number, opening hours and landing page agree with the hoarding. Train staff to ask new visitors how they heard about the store. Record normal footfall before launch, then compare the opening period and the following weeks. Outdoor may also lift searches and direct visits that are not captured by a coupon code.
Use the hoarding location checklist for the site visit, route search to build the corridor, and the outdoor copy guide before artwork approval.
