How to measure the return on an outdoor campaign

How to measure the return on an outdoor campaign

A common worry about outdoor is that you cannot measure it. You cannot count clicks, true, but you can still connect a hoarding to real business outcomes if you plan the measurement before the campaign goes live.

Decide the goal first

Measurement starts with a clear goal. Are you after awareness, footfall to a store, calls, or online searches for your brand? Each goal points to a different signal, so pick one main outcome and judge the campaign against it.

Signals you can track

  • Branded search. Watch whether searches for your name rise in the campaign city during the run.
  • Website traffic by location. Compare visits from the target city before and during.
  • A dedicated number or code. Put a unique phone number or offer code on the board so responses trace back to it.
  • Store footfall and sales. Track walk ins and revenue in the catchment against a normal period.

Use a before and after view

The simplest method is a clean comparison. Measure your chosen signal for a few weeks before the campaign, then through it, then after. A lift that appears when the boards go up and fades when they come down is a strong sign the outdoor did its job.

If you run in more than one city, hold one city back as a comparison. If the advertised city moves and the untouched city does not, you have real evidence rather than a hunch.

Ask customers

Do not overlook the direct route. A one line question at the counter or checkout, asking where a customer heard of you, adds up quickly over a few hundred replies and often surprises people.

Give it a fair window

Outdoor works through repetition, so results build over weeks rather than in a day. Judge a campaign over its full run and the weeks just after, not on the first weekend. Set the goal, pick one or two honest signals, compare before and after, and outdoor becomes as accountable as any other channel.
