Footfall and impressions explained without the jargon

Footfall and impressions explained without the jargon

When you look at a site listing you will see figures like daily footfall and daily impressions. They sound technical, but the ideas behind them are simple, and understanding them helps you compare sites with a clear head.

Footfall

Footfall is the number of people who pass a site in a day, on foot or in vehicles. It is an estimate built from traffic studies, the type of road, and how the area behaves through the day. A market road is busy in the evening, an office route peaks at rush hour, and a highway stays steady. Footfall gives you a sense of scale.

Impressions

An impression is one real chance for one person to see your ad. Not everyone who passes will actually notice the board, so impressions are usually lower than raw footfall. The gap depends on the sightline, the angle, and how much clutter competes nearby. A clean, well angled site converts more of its footfall into genuine impressions.

Two sites can share the same footfall yet deliver very different impressions. The one with a clearer view and less competition around it does more with the same crowd.

Reach and frequency

Over a full campaign, two more ideas matter. Reach is how many different people saw your ad at least once. Frequency is how many times, on average, each of them saw it. Outdoor is strong on frequency, because commuters pass the same board day after day, and that repetition is what plants a brand in memory.

How to use these numbers

  • Treat them as good estimates for comparison, not exact headcounts.
  • Favour honest impressions over flashy footfall claims.
  • Remember that a route of several sites builds frequency faster than one board alone.

How we estimate this on every site

On our platform each site is enriched once by AI when it is listed. It reads the location, road type, format and traffic and returns an estimated daily footfall, daily impressions and monthly reach, each with a short note on how it was derived. Nothing is invented on the fly and nothing changes while you browse, so two sites are always compared on the same basis. You can then sort by footfall or filter by the campaign objective a site fits best.

Read footfall as scale and impressions as real visibility. With both in view you can pick sites on merit rather than on the biggest number in the listing.
