Billboard, unipole or LED screen, which one to choose
People use the word billboard for almost any large outdoor ad, but the format you pick changes both the cost and the effect. Here is how the three most common options differ and when each makes sense.
Classic billboards
These are the large flat panels you see along highways and high streets, usually printed on flex and mounted on a wall or a frame. They are the workhorse of outdoor. You get a big canvas, a low cost per day over a long run, and plenty of room for a bold message. They suit brand building, launches and long stretches where you want steady presence.
Unipoles
A unipole is a single tall pole holding one display high above the road. Because it stands alone and sits above the clutter, it commands attention and looks premium. Rates are higher than a wall mounted board of the same size. Unipoles work well when you want one strong statement at an important junction rather than many smaller sites.
LED screens
LED screens are digital, so they show moving content and can rotate several advertisers through the day. You can run different creatives at different times, which is handy if your message changes for morning and evening crowds. They cost more and you usually buy a share of the loop rather than the whole screen. They shine for time sensitive offers, countdowns and anything that benefits from motion.
Matching format to goal
- New store opening in one area: a couple of unipoles near the catchment.
- City wide brand push: a spread of billboards across key routes.
- Weekend sale or event: LED slots in the days leading up to it.
Many strong campaigns mix formats. A unipole for the hero site, billboards to widen reach, and a few LED slots to add urgency near the end. The right blend depends on your budget and how much your message needs to move.
